HQ caught up with James White of White House Stud and Equestrian Centre. Check out this yard, and James’s CV!!

Tell us about your yard.

White House Stud and Equestrian Centre is a small yard consisting of 16 normal stables of 3.5m by 3.5m and two broodmare boxes of 3.5m by 7m.

We have a 58m by 28m Clopf Fibre arena; around 26 paddocks at 25m by 25m; four paddocks at around 25m by 50m; and a grass track that is around 500m long. We also have a secure tackroom with an alarm system. Our grooms are excellent.

The horses are fed three meals a day but as I live on the property if the horses need more than normal, I often give an extra meal at 9pm. Horses are given ad lib grass and all stables have rubber mats. Low/no dust pine shavings are used in addition to the rubber mats. Instruction for pupils is given by myself. I have competed in 1.50m showjumping, jumped a World Cup Qualifier and competed at Elementary Level Dressage. There are outrides in Helderfontein, which is a 10 min walk away.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I have been involved with horses since I was around 10 years old and left to ride in Europe at the end of 1998 when I was 18 years old. There I worked for a dealer and backed horses for him. I came back a year later and worked for Northland stables for two and a half years before going out on my own as a freelance rider, trainer and coach. I have produced many horses from backed into open level showjumping, as well as dressage.

I started riding with friends at school and got into backing horses when I was 12 years old and have backed over 350 horses since then using various different methods acquired over the years. I currently have four horses – a 9 year old stallion jumping in the 1.20m, a two and a half year old colt, a broodmare and a foal at foot.

Who would most enjoy your yard?

The yard is good for both competitive and non competitive riders of all ages.

How are you keeping yourself busy during lockdown?

During lockdown I have been keeping busy by riding all the working horses, fixing up things around the house and yard as well as home schooling my 8 year old son.
